The Walt Disney Company has announced a new leader at the helm of its operations in Japan. Tamotsu Hiiro, a seasoned executive with over 35 years of corporate experience, has been appointed as the new managing director for Japan. In his new role, Tamotsu will report directly to Luke Kang, the president of Disney’s Asia Pacific operations.

Prior to joining Disney, Tamotsu served as the president & CEO of McDonald’s Japan and spent three decades at Johnson & Johnson, eventually becoming the president of the company’s Japan division. His appointment comes as Carol Choi steps down from her position as the head of Disney Japan after five successful years. Choi will continue her regional responsibilities as the executive VP for APAC studios, original content strategy, networks, and integrated marketing.

Under Choi’s leadership, Disney+ became a popular streaming service in Japan, and the company saw success with box office hits such as “Mufasa: The Lion King,” “Moana 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Inside Out 2.” She also played a key role in establishing Disney’s Japanese original content strategy and team.

In a statement, Luke Kang expressed his excitement about Tamotsu’s appointment, highlighting his market insight, strategic acumen, and local network as valuable assets for Disney’s Japan business. Kang also praised Choi for her contributions and mentioned that she will continue to collaborate on strategic initiatives within the APAC region.

Tamotsu expressed his enthusiasm about joining The Walt Disney Company, emphasizing the iconic status of the brand and its beloved characters among Japanese consumers. He looks forward to contributing to the company’s growth in Japan, as the country becomes increasingly important in the entertainment industry.

Aside from his corporate roles, Tamotsu serves as the vice chair of Keizai Doyukai, the Japan Association of Corporate Executives. Disney has had a presence in Japan since 1959 and operates in various entertainment sectors, including studios, streaming services (Disney+), theme parks, gaming, consumer products, and retail operations through Disney stores.

The appointment of Tamotsu Hiiro signifies a new chapter for Disney in Japan, with a focus on further strengthening its presence and connecting with consumers in this key market.
