Knife-Wielding Man Shot by Chicago Police Had Active Arrest Warrants

Demond Williams (Chicago Police Department, Citizen App)

CHICAGO — The recent incident involving a knife-wielding man shot by Chicago police inside a River North hotel revealed that the suspect, identified as Demond Williams, had two active arrest warrants at the time, as confirmed by police and court records.

Williams, aged 46, is currently hospitalized following the shooting at the Courtyard By Marriott on 30 East Hubbard Street, which took place on Monday afternoon.

Chicago Police Department stated that Williams faces charges of aggravated assault of a peace officer and unlawful possession of a knife with intent. A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, where further details regarding the accusations against him will be disclosed.

Law enforcement officers observed Williams carrying a six-inch kitchen knife along Hubbard Street moments before the shooting. After tracking his movements, officers reported that Williams entered a 7-Eleven through a rear entrance.

Eyewitnesses recounted that officers utilized a Taser and repeatedly instructed Williams to drop the knife before resorting to gunfire.

According to CPD, two officers discharged their weapons, hitting Williams in the upper body. Immediate medical assistance was provided on-site to stabilize him before emergency medical services arrived. Williams is currently listed in critical condition.

Records indicate that Williams has a history of shoplifting in areas near the Magnificent Mile and the Loop. He recently pleaded guilty to felony retail theft charges in exchange for two years of probation. However, he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants that were active at the time of his latest arrest.
