Chloe West’s art is a captivating blend of Dutch Golden Age iconographies and American Western motifs, set against the backdrop of Wyoming’s stunning landscapes. In her latest solo exhibition, “Games of Chance” at HARPER’S in New York City, West challenges stereotypes of the West as a rugged frontier dominated by masculinity.

One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is “Cowboy Philosopher,” where West portrays herself seated next to a mountain lion skull on a table covered with a celestial tapestry. This painting draws inspiration from European portraiture and still life traditions, creating a striking juxtaposition between life and death, folklore and daily life, and the sacred and the profane.

Through her art, West subverts the traditional narratives of cowboy culture, incorporating elements like animal bones, thorns, and knives to symbolize the impermanence of life and evoke a sense of the supernatural. By dressing herself in western attire, she connects with the landscape and its customs while also exploring the impact of European ideologies like Manifest Destiny on the region.

“Games of Chance” is a thought-provoking exploration of frontier heroism and the legacy it has left behind. West’s hyperrealistic figurative works blur the lines between past and present, inviting viewers to reconsider their preconceived notions of the American West.

The exhibition is on display at HARPER’S until May 10th, offering a unique opportunity to experience West’s captivating art in person.
