A shocking incident occurred in the Loop when a migrant, Ralwin Galito Perez, was charged with stabbing and seriously injuring another man. The incident, which took place on March 18, was captured on cell phone video and circulated widely on social media. The video showed Perez, 30, holding a knife and violently attacking the 27-year-old victim near the corner of Dearborn and Van Buren.
In the video, Perez can be seen taking full roundhouse swings with the weapon, causing the victim to fall to the pavement. CPD officers quickly arrived at the scene and applied a chest seal and tourniquet to stop the victim’s severe bleeding from stab wounds on his arm and torso. Unfortunately, the assailant had fled the scene by the time the officers arrived.
Perez was later identified as the assailant by the police, leading to his arrest on Tuesday to face charges. He is currently charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
This is not the first time Perez has had a run-in with the law. Records show that he has been arrested three other times for various offenses, including shoplifting at Nordstrom Rack, driving without a license and registration violations near a migrant shelter, and driving without a license in the Loop.
The details of the incident and the prosecution’s case against Perez are expected to be revealed during his detention hearing. The victim, on the other hand, is recovering from his injuries and is listed in critical condition.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise in urban areas, and the importance of swift police intervention in such situations. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
