New Mexico’s Political Landscape Shifts as Sam Bregman Enters Governor’s Race
On Thursday, Sam Bregman, a Democratic district attorney from New Mexico and father to Major League Baseball star Alex Bregman, announced his candidacy for the state’s governor’s office. This move sets the stage for a primary contest against former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland in a state traditionally leaning toward blue.
Bregman, in his campaign launch, presented a centrist platform, positioning himself as a bulwark against what he described as the “extremism” propagated by former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, as well as criticizing congressional Democrats whom he labeled as “weak, ineffective, and complicit.” This primary race promises to be a microcosm of a broader battle over the Democratic Party’s identity, particularly as it navigates a potential second term for Trump.
Having been appointed as the District Attorney of Bernalillo County by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in January 2023, Bregman has a legal background that he is keen to leverage. With Lujan Grisham being term-limited, the 2026 election is wide open for Democratic candidates vying for the governor’s seat.
In a campaign video that features Bregman galloping through New Mexico’s picturesque landscapes on horseback, he asserts that “New Mexico is under attack by Elon Musk, his puppet Donald Trump, and the Republicans in Washington.” This dramatic framing positions Bregman as the intended protector of the state’s interests. Interestingly, his son, who recently signed with the Boston Red Sox after a successful tenure with the Houston Astros, did not make an appearance in this introductory video.
With crime rates rising significantly, Bregman emphasized his legal expertise, pledging to take a tough stance on crime and ensure “violent gang members are put behind bars.” His commitment comes in the wake of Governor Lujan Grisham declaring a state of emergency in Albuquerque, even deploying the National Guard to assist local law enforcement in combating escalating criminal activity.
Moreover, Bregman did not shy away from targeting the “radical left,” arguing that their divisive actions have weakened the party and allowed Republicans to gain traction. “It’s the intolerance of the radical left that has divided our party,” he stated. “At a time when we need everyone to unite against Trump, they, along with the MAGA extremists, have hijacked our politics, leaving everyday New Mexicans behind.”
As Bregman gears up to face Haaland, who has served as Biden’s Interior Secretary and previously represented New Mexico’s battleground 1st District in Congress, the stakes are high. Both candidates have held leadership roles within the state’s Democratic Party. Although Bregman is currently viewed as a strong contender for the 2026 race, Republicans are optimistic about their chances in recent statewide elections, despite the absence of high-profile candidates stepping forward just yet.
