In a swift response to the House’s recent passage of a controversial bill mandating proof of citizenship for voter registration, Senate Democrats have made their position clear: the legislation is effectively dead on arrival.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) issued a pointed statement, asserting:

“The SAVE Act is a direct assault on the principles of American democracy, driven by Trump and Congressional Republicans. This legislation seeks to pressure states into adopting measures that would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, obstruct automatic voter registration, and hinder in-person voter registration efforts. It is nothing short of an outrage.”

“While we all champion the ideals of safe and transparent elections, extensive research has consistently shown that instances of voter fraud are exceedingly rare. Nevertheless, Congressional Republicans appear intent on disenfranchising millions of American citizens, consolidating control over our electoral processes, and perpetuating a culture of election skepticism and denialism.”

“Let me be unequivocal: under my leadership, Senate Democrats will ensure that this attempt at a power grab does not advance in the Senate.”

For the SAVE Act to pass, it requires 60 votes in the Senate, which translates to needing support from Democratic senators. Schumer is confident that no Democrat will back this bill.

“I doubt the SAVE Act will garner a single Democratic vote in the Senate. It lacks the necessary support to overcome a filibuster and reach a final vote,” he stated.

The SAVE Act is widely viewed as a partisan maneuver aimed at disenfranchising likely Democratic voters nationwide. This push is seen as a blatant attempt to undermine democratic norms.

Ultimately, it appears the SAVE Act is headed nowhere, thanks to the determined opposition from Democrats.

As long as these power plays continue, it will be up to Democrats and the American public to resist them at every opportunity.
