Netflix is currently working on a sequel series for the popular show “One Tree Hill,” as reported by Variety. The new series will see original stars Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Daneel Ackles serving as executive producers. Daneel Ackles will be producing under her Chaos Machine banner alongside her husband, Jensen Ackles. The script for the reboot will be handled by Becky Hartman-Edwards, known for her work on “Firefly Lane” and “Parenthood.” Warner Bros. Television, the original series’ producer, will also be involved in the production of the follow-up.
While Bush and Burton are set to reprise their roles, Ackles is currently in talks to return as well. It is unclear at this time whether other original cast members will also make a comeback.
The original “One Tree Hill” series aired for nine seasons on The WB and later The CW. The ensemble cast included Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Lenz, Paul Johansson, and Lee Norris. Set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, the show initially focused on the rivalry between half-brothers Lucas and Nathan, played by Murray and Lafferty, respectively. As the series progressed, it delved into themes of friendship, romance, and family drama.
Burton portrayed Peyton Sawyer, Bush played Brooke Davis, and Ackles portrayed Rachel Gatina in the original series. Bush, Burton, and Lenz have previously hosted the “One Tree Hill” rewatch podcast “Drama Queens,” with Burton stepping away after Season 6 due to her character’s exit. Robert Buckley, who joined the show in Season 7, now serves as the third host.
It is important to note that Mark Schwahn, the original creator of “One Tree Hill,” will not be involved in the sequel. In 2017, Schwahn faced allegations of assault and harassment from Burton, as well as other cast and crew members. The group has openly discussed the alleged abuse on their podcast.
As the details of the “One Tree Hill” sequel continue to unfold, fans can expect a fresh take on the beloved series with familiar faces and new storylines. Stay tuned for updates on this highly anticipated project.
