Mohsen Mahdawi, a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian activism at Columbia University, was detained by immigration officials in Vermont on Monday. Mahdawi, who had been actively involved in organizing demonstrations against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, was taken into custody during what he believed to be a routine appointment related to his U.S. citizenship application.

Following his sudden detention, Mahdawi’s family, legal team, and supporters worked tirelessly to locate him and prevent his transfer to a more conservative jurisdiction where deportation was likely. Fortunately, a federal judge in Vermont intervened, granting a temporary restraining order to keep Mahdawi in the state until further notice.

A green card holder for the past decade, Mahdawi hails from a refugee camp in the West Bank and has been studying philosophy at Columbia University. His involvement in pro-Palestinian student organizations, including co-founding Dar: the Palestinian Student Society and Columbia University Apartheid Divest, has made him a target of the Trump administration’s crackdown on foreign students engaged in such activities.

Despite not being charged with any crime, Mahdawi’s immigration status has been used as grounds for his potential removal from the country. Immigration officials have alleged that his activism poses a threat to U.S. foreign policy and national security, a claim unsupported by evidence.

Mahdawi’s past experiences, including witnessing the death of a childhood friend at the hands of an Israeli soldier, have fueled his advocacy for Palestinian rights. However, he has expressed a desire for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing love over anger or hate in his motivations.

Various pro-Israel groups have targeted Mahdawi online, calling for his deportation and citing his visa status as a reason for removal. Despite these challenges, Mahdawi remains committed to his beliefs and peaceful activism.

In response to Mahdawi’s detention, Vermont lawmakers, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch, alongside Representative Becca Balint, have condemned the arrest as immoral, inhumane, and illegal. They have demanded Mahdawi’s immediate release and urged respect for his due process rights as a legal resident of the United States.

As the situation unfolds, Mahdawi’s supporters continue to rally behind him, advocating for justice and fair treatment in the face of unjust targeting and discrimination.
