Jon Stewart Slams President Trump for Deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
On a recent episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart took a more serious tone as he criticized President Donald Trump for the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Stewart began by outlining Garcia’s story. He described Garcia as an undocumented migrant from El Salvador, a father, and a husband to an American woman. Despite his ties to the United States, Garcia was deported to El Salvador last month due to an “administrative error” as stated by the Justice Department. Stewart humorously suggested that Garcia could hitch a ride back to the U.S. with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who recently visited the White House.
“You don’t even have to give Garcia the middle seat,” Stewart quipped. “I’m sure Garcia would just grab the wing and Tom Cruise it over here if he had to. But sadly, Bukele arrived at the White House with just the Miami club promoter clothes on his back and a pocket full of excuses.”
Stewart then played a clip from the meeting between Bukele and Trump, where Bukele was asked about Garcia’s possible return to America. Bukele’s response, referring to Garcia as a terrorist, left Stewart visibly disappointed. He expressed his frustration with both presidents for not taking action to rectify Garcia’s unjust imprisonment.
“I know you guys don’t care about this guy. I’m talking about [Trump and Bukele], but somebody else cares about this person, and you just randomly, with no evidence that you’ll show anybody, call him a terrorist,” Stewart remarked.
Stewart highlighted Trump’s lack of concern for Garcia’s situation, focusing instead on deflecting questions from journalists. He played a clip of Trump dismissing a reporter’s inquiry about abiding by Supreme Court rulings, shifting the conversation to border security.
Another clip showed Trump suggesting openness to deporting U.S. citizens if they are deemed “really bad people.” Stewart expressed alarm at the potential implications of such a statement, warning that even American citizens could be targeted for deportation under Trump’s administration.
“He’s gonna do that to U.S. citizens,” Stewart exclaimed. “I think the hosts of ‘The View’ are about to get administratively error’d. I gotta tell you, I did not think he would get this authoritarian this fast. I really didn’t. I’m sorry.”
