Ralph Ziman, an artist based in Los Angeles, is on a mission to create awe-inspiring art using beads. In his latest project titled “The MiG-21 Project,” Ziman and his team have meticulously covered a military jet in millions of glass beads, promising to leave viewers breathless.

This project is part of Ziman’s trilogy, “Weapons of Mass Production,” which explores the impact of the Cold War Era and the global arms trade. Growing up in Apartheid-era South Africa, Ziman draws inspiration from his past to reimagine symbols of violence into symbols of resilience and collaboration. The first two installments of the trilogy, “The AK-47 Project” and the project involving the Casspir MRAPV, have already captivated audiences with their colorful and intricate beadwork.

“The MiG-21 Project” takes this concept to new heights, combining photography, costume design, and historical research. The project not only features the beaded jet but also includes cinematic photographs and Afrofuturist regalia inspired by military flight suits, African tribal textiles, and space travel.

Ziman’s team includes skilled artisans from Zimbabwe and Indigenous Ndebele women from South Africa, known for their exceptional beadwork. For the Ndebele community, beadwork holds deep cultural significance, representing identity and tradition. This collaboration adds a powerful layer to the project, merging artistry with cultural heritage.

Through his work, Ziman addresses pressing issues such as war, the global arms race, modern colonialism, systemic racism, and white supremacy, all within the context of Apartheid. Proceeds from the project will be donated to support the people of Ukraine in their ongoing conflict with Russia, underscoring the project’s commitment to social impact.

“The MiG-21 Project” will be on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle from June 21 to January 26, 2026. This exhibition promises to be a visual feast, showcasing the intricate beadwork and thought-provoking themes that define Ziman’s artistic vision.
