New Jersey Representative Donald Norcross is currently enduring an extended stay in the hospital following a serious medical episode, as confirmed by his office. The Democrat, who serves the stateâs 1st District, is presently receiving intensive care at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
At 66 years old, Norcross experienced a significant health scare earlier this month while on a trip in North Carolina.
According to a report from the New Jersey Globe, Norcross began to feel unwell during a flight returning to New Jersey from Florida last weekend. The plane was diverted to North Carolina to ensure he received immediate medical attention.
He was ultimately transferred to Cooper University Hospital in his home state on April 7, his office reported.
The congressman has been diagnosed with cholangitis, a gallbladder infection that escalated into sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Fortunately, doctors at Cooper were able to successfully remove the gallstone responsible for the infection; however, Norcross remains in intensive care.
Dr. Eric Kupersmith, the chief physician executive at Cooper University Health Care, provided an update stating that Norcross is responding positively to treatment, but âfaces an extended recovery that could necessitate physical rehabilitation.â
This prolonged recovery period has raised alarms among House Democrats. With Congress operating under tight margins, each vote becomes crucial for both parties, as Politico has noted.
Norcrossâ absence is particularly problematic for Democrats, who are already down several members due to recent deaths, including Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey, who passed away in August 2024, according to nj.com.
Democrats also lost Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas in July 2024, as reported by the Texas Tribune. These losses have tightened the partyâs grip in the House.
With Norcross sidelined, Democrats are struggling to maintain their voting bloc. Currently, Republicans hold a slender 220-213 majority in the House, following recent special elections in Florida, according to Reuters.
âLast week, Norcrossâs absence ⊠enabled the GOP to pass a controversial budget proposal â one that Norcross himself condemned as âdisgustingâ and âdraconianâ in a statement.
Despite his hospitalization, Norcrossâs office remains functional, with staff actively managing constituent services. Reports suggest that he is in regular contact with his team, keeping abreast of developments in Washington and his district.
Nevertheless, his physical presence in Congress is unlikely to be feasible in the near future. Politico speculated that this situation poses a strategic challenge for Democratic leadership as they navigate a tumultuous legislative session.
House Democrats are already faced with a packed agenda, including upcoming votes on health care reform. Norcrossâ absence could further jeopardize their position on these vital issues.
Sepsis, the condition Norcross is contending with, arises when the body reacts excessively to an infection, potentially leading to organ failure if not treated promptly, as per guidelines from the Mayo Clinic. Septic shock carries a mortality rate between 30 and 40 percent.
The timeline for Norcrossâ recovery remains uncertain, with rehabilitation likely extending over weeks or even months. This ambiguity places Democrats in a precarious position as they strategize their upcoming actions.
Democratic leaders may need to contemplate special elections to fill vacant seats, though such processes require time and resources.
For now, they must maneuver through Congress without Norcrossâ vital vote, a significant obstacle in a deeply divided House.
