Warner Bros. Discovery is making a strategic move to generate additional revenue from Max subscribers who have been sharing their accounts with others. Max recently rolled out the Extra Member Add-On feature in the U.S., priced at $7.99 per month. This feature allows the primary account holder to invite a friend or family member outside of their household to create a separate account under the same subscription.

The decision to introduce the Extra Member feature comes after Warner Bros. Discovery executives announced their plans to crack down on sharing streaming accounts outside of the household. This move follows the success of similar initiatives by streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ in curbing illicit password-sharing and increasing revenue through account-sharing options.

With the Extra Member Add-On, subscribers will have their own login credentials separate from the primary account. They can stream content from one profile on one device at a time while enjoying all the benefits included in the primary account owner’s plan. The feature is available for $7.99 per month, regardless of the subscription tier the user is on, and is limited to one add-on per account.

When a primary account owner invites an Extra Member to create an account, they can choose to transfer a single adult profile, including watch history, recommendations, and settings associated with that profile to the new account. This seamless transfer process ensures that the Extra Member can continue to access Max without any interruptions.

JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros Discovery, emphasized the benefits of the Extra Member Add-On and Profile Transfer features, stating that they provide subscribers with a new way to enjoy top-tier content at a great value. These updates offer flexibility in managing accounts and cater to subscribers who have users outside of their household.

Max offers a diverse lineup of content from HBO, Warner Bros., A24, Adult Swim, and the DC Universe, along with original and licensed programming. Subscribers can enjoy popular shows like “The Last of Us,” “Hacks,” “Duster,” “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” and “Peacemaker,” as well as HBO originals such as “The White Lotus” and “House of the Dragon.” Additionally, Max is home to Warner Bros. Pictures’ films like “Dune,” “Beetlejuice,” and series like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

With the launch of the Extra Member Add-On feature, Warner Bros. Discovery aims to enhance the viewing experience for subscribers while generating additional revenue from account-sharing options. The move reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and ensuring that subscribers have access to premium content at an exceptional value.
