After recent protests at the Lakeview home of Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs, security measures were ramped up to ensure the safety of his family. This decision was reinforced after an arsonist targeted the Pennsylvania governor’s residence on April 13.

Surprisingly, rather than the Illinois State Police, the Chicago Police Department took on the task of providing security for Frerichs. Patrol cars that would typically be responding to emergency calls in the Town Hall (19th) District were stationed outside his home in Lakeview.

The increased security measures came after pro-Palestinian protesters vandalized Frerichs’ home last October. Subsequent protests saw demonstrators throwing red paint on the house and using bullhorns to voice their grievances. In response to these incidents, CPD began conducting periodic premise checks at Frerichs’ residence.

However, the security approach escalated on April 15 following the arson attack on the Pennsylvania governor’s home. CPD implemented a 24/7 presence outside Frerichs’ house, with patrol cars stationed there instead of patrolling other neighborhoods. The vehicles were often parked alongside a portable surveillance camera trailer for added monitoring.

Questions arose from neighbors about the constant police presence, prompting inquiries from CWBChicago. CPD cited “public safety concerns” as the reason for the heightened security measures. Frerichs’ office acknowledged the coordination between CPD and ISP for security but emphasized the need for caution in light of recent violent incidents against elected officials.

Less than an hour after CWBChicago’s inquiry, CPD ceased the continuous security detail at Frerichs’ home and reverted to periodic premise checks. The treasurer’s office reiterated his support for peaceful protests but condemned the late-night demonstrations at his residence as intimidation tactics.

The swift response to the security concerns highlights the importance of maintaining a balance between protecting public officials and respecting the rights of peaceful protesters. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by elected officials in ensuring their safety while upholding democratic values.
