House Republicans are methodically advancing through committee sessions, crafting the intricate components of their forthcoming reconciliation bill. At the heart of this legislative endeavor lies the Trump-era tax cuts, predominantly benefiting the wealthy and corporations.
Representative Ted Lieu (D-CA) has long been known for his candid approach, and he recently laid bare a troubling reality for the American public.
Lieu articulated, “The fact that Democrats and my colleague, Representative Periel, feel compelled to introduce an amendment stating that ICE cannot deport US citizens is utterly absurd. This shouldn’t even be a topic for discussion. The law is clear: US citizens cannot be deported by ICE. It’s written in the Constitution. I will be astounded if Republicans vote against this; I yield back.”
Indeed, Lieu’s assertion reflects a fundamental truth: there should be no debate on this matter. The deportation of US citizens by ICE is categorically prohibited. Any actions taken by the Trump administration in this regard are not only questionable but illegal.
In short, the notion that this issue requires an amendment is, frankly, preposterous.
The President of the United States cannot arbitrarily target citizens based on their skin color, language, or perceived “Americanness” and send them away to foreign prisons. Yet, this has become the alarming reality under the Trump administration.
What we are witnessing is a blatant disregard for the law, with Congressional Republicans enabling such violations by neglecting their critical role as a balance against the Executive Branch.
A compelling argument for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections is the urgency of restoring Congress as a co-equal branch of government, one that can effectively check presidential overreach.
It is indeed concerning that House committees are compelled to vote on amendments that should be unnecessary, such as prohibiting the deportation of US citizens.
