The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a bread recall due to the discovery of glass fragments on the top of certain bread products from Upper Crust Crest Hill Bakery. The bakery is voluntarily recalling over 800 cases of bread, including Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls, Multigrain Sourdough bread, and Whole Grain Multigrain bread. These products were originally sold frozen in paper cartons.

To determine if your bread is affected by the recall, check the packaging for specific codes: CP45 for the Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll, CP12 for the Multigrain Sourdough, and CP12 for the Whole Grain Multigrain varieties. If you find these codes, do not consume the bread and either discard it or return it for a refund.

The recall, initiated on April 12, is expected to impact six states: Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio. While the bakery is located in Maryland, it’s important for consumers in other states to check their bread as well. The FDA did not provide details on the size or quantity of glass fragments found in the bread packages, but recalls typically involve entire lots as a precautionary measure.

Ingesting glass can cause serious harm to the gastrointestinal tract, depending on the sharpness, shape, and size of the fragments. If you suspect that you have consumed glass, contact your doctor and watch for symptoms such as chest or abdominal pain, bloating, fever, blood in the stool, or coughing up blood. Providing details about the glass fragments can help your doctor assess the risk of internal injuries.

Food safety oversight is crucial, especially during a recall like this. With recent cuts to FDA staff and resources, it’s essential for consumers to inspect their food before consumption. Look for any unusual appearance or foreign substances in your food to avoid potential harm.

Stay safe and vigilant when it comes to food safety, and always prioritize your health when dealing with recalls or potential contaminants in your food.
