The New York Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the release of sealed arrest records of a New Jersey woman, Leqaa Kordia, who was detained during a protest last year. These records were provided to U.S. authorities, leading to immigration officials initiating deportation proceedings against her.

According to New York State law and department policy, sealed records of arrests or summonses are not supposed to be disclosed. However, the police handed over these documents to Department of Homeland Security investigators who claimed they needed the information for a criminal investigation. Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Kordia’s lawyer confirmed this development.

Kordia, a 32-year-old Palestinian woman without a valid visa, was arrested during a protest at Columbia University in April 2024, where she was demonstrating against the war in Gaza. The arrest resulted in a summons for disorderly conduct, which was subsequently dismissed. She returned to New Jersey after the incident to focus on starting a business.

In a surprising turn of events, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Kordia on March 13 in New Jersey and transferred her to Prairieland Detention Facility in Texas for deportation proceedings. It was later revealed that information from her sealed arrest record was used by federal officials in building their case against her.

Arthur Ago, Kordia’s lawyer, emphasized that the allegations of money laundering were baseless and caught them off guard. Despite federal officials describing her as a low risk individual in their documents, they later changed their stance during court proceedings. The lack of transparency in the handling of Kordia’s case has raised concerns about the Trump administration’s tactics in expediting deportations.

The case underscores the importance of verifying requests from federal authorities to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. The Trump administration’s aggressive stance on deportations has led to heightened scrutiny of cases like Kordia’s, where individuals are targeted based on dubious grounds.

Kordia’s situation is further complicated by a misunderstanding regarding her visa status, stemming from erroneous advice she received in 2022. This misstep left her without a valid visa, providing immigration officials with grounds for deportation.

The events leading up to Kordia’s detention highlight the complexities and challenges faced by individuals navigating the immigration system in the United States. The need for legal representation and vigilance in dealing with immigration authorities is crucial to safeguarding the rights of individuals like Kordia.

In conclusion, the case of Leqaa Kordia sheds light on the intersection of immigration enforcement and criminal investigations, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of such cases. As the legal battle for Kordia’s deportation continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and injustices within the immigration system.
