Donald Trump appears to operate with a rather conspicuous double standard when it comes to tariffs. While billionaires and large corporations can waltz right into his office and secure exemptions, ordinary Americans are left out in the cold.

The same privileges are not extended to the everyday American and their families.

During a recent press briefing, Trump faced a question regarding potential tariff exemptions for essential baby items, such as car seats. When asked if he would consider exempting products that families rely on, his response was, “I don’t know. I’ll think about it. I don’t know. I really don’t. I don’t want to start. I wanna make it nice and simple. I’m not looking to have, uh, so many exemptions that nobody knows what’s going on. We have to make it very simple, but I’ll take a look at it.”

His intent to “look at it” suggests that any real action is unlikely to materialize. After all, families in Ohio who depend on basic necessities for their children don’t have the luxury of writing a hefty check to gain Trump’s attention for a tariff exemption.

This pattern of preferential treatment highlights what can only be described as an access presidency—where those who can afford to pay for influence receive special consideration.

As a result, working-class Americans will bear the brunt of these tariffs. The absence of exemptions for family essentials translates into fewer toys and necessities for children, sending a clear message: the needs of American families are not a priority.

In light of rising prices, one shouldn’t expect Trump to intervene; his indifference to the plight of ordinary citizens is evident. While it’s commendable that the media is pressing him on these issues, the reality remains stark: this president shows little interest in alleviating the struggles of the American public.

What are your thoughts on Trump’s stance regarding tariffs and their impact on families? Feel free to share your insights in the comments below.
