DirecTV Raises Prices Amid Contract Dispute with Disney

DirecTV subscribers are facing a double whammy as the pay-TV provider has announced price hikes just as it continues to negotiate a new contract with Disney, resulting in the loss of popular channels like ESPN and ABC. The higher pricing for DirecTV’s satellite TV and streaming services is set to take effect on or after Oct. 6, 2024, with customers seeing the new rates reflected in their upcoming billing cycles.

In a notice to subscribers, DirecTV stated, “We’re adjusting the price of your television package to remain competitive in the marketplace while still delivering the best programming. TV networks are increasing the fees they charge us for content, and we are committed to providing quality programming at a fair price.”

The price of DirecTV Stream Choice will increase by $6 to $114.99/month, and DirecTV Stream Ultimate will go up by $10 to $129.99/month. Satellite TV packages will also see price hikes ranging from $2 to $10 per month, depending on the tier. Additionally, regional sports fees for some customers will increase by up to $2 monthly based on ZIP code.

The timing of DirecTV’s pricing changes is unfortunate, as the company failed to reach an agreement with Disney before the expiration of their distribution deal, leading to the removal of Disney-owned channels from the lineup. As a goodwill gesture, DirecTV is offering a $20 credit to affected customers and a $30 credit to those who sign up for alternative streaming services like Dish Network’s Sling Orange or Fubo.

DirecTV is majority-owned by AT&T and has seen a decline in subscribers over the years. With 11.3 million subscribers as of the end of 2023, down from a peak of 25.5 million in 2016, the company faces challenges in retaining customers amidst pricing changes and content disputes.
