The latest social media trend sweeping schools across the nation is the “Chromebook challenge,” where students are deliberately short-circuiting their laptops in a dangerous and destructive manner. This trend involves jamming objects such as push pins, staples, paper clips, metallic gum wrappers, and even pencil lead into their laptops’ USB or charging ports, under keyboard keys, or near the batteries to cause them to spark and smoke. The videos of these smoking laptops are then shared on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, garnering reactions from viewers in the form of emojis.

Not only are the laptops being damaged, but floors and desks are also being scorched, lessons are being interrupted, classrooms are being evacuated, and fire and police departments are being called in to respond. Some students have even faced suspension or criminal charges as schools crack down on this dangerous trend.

School districts across the country, from Maine to Nevada, have sent letters to families urging them to intervene. Some districts have suspended students and imposed fines for property damage caused by the Chromebook challenge. In some cases, students have faced felony criminal charges for their actions.

In one instance, a student in New Jersey was charged with third-degree arson and criminal mischief after causing their Chromebook to smolder, leading to the evacuation of the school. In California, a 13-year-old girl was arrested for felony arson of property after participating in the challenge at school.

The consequences of the Chromebook challenge can be severe, with the potential for fires to spread to bedding, drapes, or furniture in homes. School districts are taking a strong stance against this trend, warning parents of potential financial liability for damage caused by their children.

The dangers of social media challenges like the Chromebook challenge are not to be underestimated. While some may see it as a harmless prank, the potential for serious harm is very real. Schools and parents must work together to educate students about the risks and consequences of participating in these dangerous trends.
