Crime Rates Surge in Ocasio-Cortez’s District

Since taking office in 2019, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has seen a staggering 70 percent increase in major crime within her congressional district. This alarming statistic not only raises eyebrows but also surpasses the overall crime rise in New York City, which has been recorded at 30 percent during the same timeframe.

A recent analysis by The New York Post sheds light on the severity of the situation, particularly in the 110th Precinct of Queens. This area, infamous for its links to prostitution and human trafficking, has experienced a jaw-dropping 105 percent spike in major crimes—making it the precinct with the highest increase across the city since Ocasio-Cortez took office.

The report further details that the other precincts in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, which includes regions of both Queens and the Bronx, have also seen crime rates that exceed the city’s average increase.

Major crimes, as categorized by the NYPD, include serious offenses such as murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and auto theft. The Post conducted its analysis by reviewing NYPD records of these seven significant felony categories in precincts that have consistently been part of Ocasio-Cortez’s 14th Congressional District since her election.

The affected precincts encompass the 43rd and 45th in the Bronx, alongside the 109th, 110th, 114th, and 115th in Queens. This alarming rise in crime paints a stark picture of the challenges facing her constituents and raises questions about her effectiveness in addressing these issues.

Despite the troubling crime statistics in her district, Ocasio-Cortez continues to position herself as a key figure in the Democratic Party’s resistance against the current administration during Trump’s second term. She is currently traversing the nation alongside fellow progressive Bernie Sanders, promoting their “Fight Oligarchy” tour—an initiative that seems to prioritize rhetoric over addressing local issues directly.

Speculation is mounting regarding Ocasio-Cortez’s political aspirations, with many suggesting she may be eyeing a Senate run in 2028 to succeed the current Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer. Interestingly, a recent poll indicates that she holds a double-digit lead over Schumer in hypothetical primary matchups. The survey by the progressive firm Data for Progress reveals that 41 percent of likely Democratic voters are inclined to support Ocasio-Cortez, while only 36 percent favor Schumer, leaving an additional 9 percent undecided.
