Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) did not join the few Republican lawmakers who criticized President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs on Canada earlier this year. However, he issued a cautionary statement over the weekend regarding the potential negative impacts of the president’s tariff policies.

In a recent interview with CNN’s Manu Raju, Curtis discussed a wide range of topics concerning the current state of the Republican Party. When asked about his biggest concerns regarding Trump’s actions, Curtis expressed his apprehension about the potential harm that tariffs could inflict on small businesses.

Curtis emphasized the need to exercise caution when it comes to tariffs, as he believes they could have devastating effects on small businesses. While acknowledging the importance of playing the long game with President Trump on tariff negotiations, Curtis refrained from second-guessing the president’s approach.

The senator highlighted the recent announcement by Trump of a 10% baseline tariff on nearly all imports to the U.S., with even higher levies imposed on China. While Trump argues that these tariffs could revitalize American manufacturing, economists have warned of the possibility of a recession or worse.

Having been elected last year to fill former Sen. Mitt Romney’s seat, Curtis has had a mixed relationship with Trump. Despite not endorsing Trump in the Republican primaries and condemning him for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Curtis voted against both of Trump’s impeachments while serving in the U.S. House.

During the interview with Raju, Curtis also praised Trump for his actions at the border and his role in promoting stability internationally. However, he criticized the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Trump adviser Elon Musk, for targeting federal workers and agencies in an effort to reduce wasteful spending.

Curtis emphasized the importance of addressing the U.S. debt and deficit while maintaining compassion for those affected by budget cuts. He stressed the need for a balanced approach that considers the human impact of government decisions.

Overall, Curtis’s comments reflect a nuanced perspective on Trump’s policies and their implications for the economy and small businesses. His cautious approach to tariffs and emphasis on compassion in government decision-making highlight his commitment to responsible governance.
