George Wendt, who effortlessly embodied the beer-loving everyman Norm Peterson throughout all 11 seasons of the legendary NBC sitcom Cheers, has died at the age of 76.
His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully in his sleep at home early Tuesday morning.
“George was a devoted family man and a cherished friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” a representative for Wendt stated. “His absence will be felt profoundly. The family requests privacy during this difficult time.”
Born in Chicago and raised on the South Side, Wendt began his career in the 1970s with the iconic improvisational comedy troupe Second City, rooted in his hometown.
He later became a fixture on Saturday Night Live, portraying Bob Swerski, one of the enthusiastic “superfans” who frequented Coach Mike Ditka’s restaurant in Chicago to cheer on “Da Bears.”
