The renewable energy sector in the US took a hit on Thursday as President Donald Trump’s tax bill included aggressive cuts to clean energy tax credits. This move, which was unexpected by many, has raised concerns about the future of the industry under Trump’s administration.

The bill, which passed the Republican-controlled House, aims to end clean energy tax credits earlier than planned, going against former president Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. This has sent shockwaves through the renewable energy market, with companies like NextEra Energy and Enphase Energy seeing significant drops in their stock prices.

Analysts are warning that the legislation could have a devastating impact on the clean energy sector, with the residential solar industry being hit particularly hard. The bill cuts a tax credit for homeowners who purchase solar systems and expedites the phase-out of an investment tax credit for commercial installations.

Investors are now wary of green energy stocks, with many believing that there is no longer a reason to invest in US solar companies. The Invesco Solar exchange traded fund, which is heavily focused on US stocks, saw a significant drop in its net asset value, and companies like Sunrun have also suffered losses.

On the other hand, the fossil fuels lobby has welcomed the passage of the bill, with the American Petroleum Institute hailing it as a step towards restoring American energy dominance. However, the future of the bill now rests in the hands of the Republican-controlled Senate, where lawmakers may choose to soften some of the more drastic cuts to clean energy incentives.

While there were some slight wins for the green energy sector, such as exemptions for tax credits affecting the nuclear industry, the overall outlook remains uncertain. Investors are keeping a close eye on developments in the Senate, but the possibility of further declines in green energy stocks looms large.

In conclusion, the renewable energy sector in the US is facing a challenging road ahead under Trump’s second term. The aggressive cuts to clean energy tax credits have rattled investors and industry experts alike, leaving many wondering what the future holds for clean energy in America.
