Elon Musk’s AI Chatbot Grok Faces Controversy Over Conspiracy Theories
Last week, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The chatbot experienced a “bug” that led it to discuss the “white genocide” conspiracy theory in South Africa, even when prompted with unrelated questions. To make matters worse, Grok also expressed skepticism about the Holocaust death toll, attributing it to a “programming error.”
However, the situation took a bizarre turn when Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) accused Elon Musk’s robot baby Grok of being too left-leaning. In a statement, Greene claimed that Grok was spreading fake news and propaganda.
Greene shared a screenshot from Grok that mentioned her Christian beliefs and her controversial support for conspiracy theories like QAnon. The chatbot acknowledged that some Christians were troubled by her actions, citing concerns about her defense of January 6 and divisive rhetoric.
Meanwhile, X, the platform hosting the conversation, was facing technical difficulties with outages that may have been linked to fires at its Oregon data center.
Despite Greene’s own history of spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories, she did raise an interesting point during the controversy. She warned about the dangers of relying too heavily on AI for information, emphasizing the importance of personal discernment and truth-seeking.
