The Canterbury region is set to receive a significant boost in education funding, with the government announcing a $161 million investment in local schools. Education Minister Erica Stanford unveiled the plans today, highlighting the focus on addressing the growing demand for classroom space in the area.

Selwyn emerged as a major beneficiary of the funding, receiving $108 million for various school projects. This includes the construction of a new school with 12 classrooms, as well as additional classrooms at existing schools. Stanford emphasized the importance of responding to the community’s needs promptly, stating, “The Selwyn community has made it clear that there is a shortage of classroom space, and we are committed to providing a comprehensive growth plan to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.”

The investment in Selwyn will result in significant developments, such as the expansion of Lincoln Primary School with ten classrooms, a 12-classroom extension at Ararira Springs Primary School, and additional classrooms at other schools in the region. Furthermore, plans are in place for the establishment of new schools in Prebbleton and Lincoln, aiming to accommodate the increasing student population.

In addition to the projects in Selwyn, $53 million will be allocated to create 51 new classrooms across Canterbury. This includes the construction of a new primary school on Milns Rd and classroom additions to various schools in the wider region. Stanford highlighted the government’s efforts to drive efficiencies in school property delivery, resulting in a 28% reduction in the average cost of a classroom and a 30% increase in the number of classrooms delivered last year.

The ultimate goal of these investments is to ensure that every child in Canterbury has access to high-quality education in safe and conducive learning environments. Stanford reiterated the government’s commitment to expediting the construction process to benefit schools, families, and communities at the earliest opportunity.
