In a move that may raise eyebrows and questions alike, the Trump administration has unveiled plans for a new agency, the Office of Remigration.

This initiative is detailed in a 136-page briefing presented to six Congressional committees, including the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Appropriations, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Approval for this proposal is expected by July 1.

According to the briefing, “The Office of Remigration will function as the central hub for immigration concerns and repatriation oversight within the [Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration].”

The agency aims to create a policy framework that promotes interagency collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and others on removals and repatriations, while also advancing the President’s immigration objectives through internal policy initiatives.

Moreover, the Office is expected to actively support the voluntary repatriation of migrants to their countries of origin or legal status.

Beyond remigration, the document suggests extensive changes to the U.S. diplomatic service, including the significant downsizing of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, and the introduction of a new role for a deputy assistant secretary dedicated to “Democracy and Western values.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that this reorganization will lead to a more nimble Department, better positioned to safeguard American interests and enhance national security globally.

Should these proposals come to fruition, the U.S. would not be alone in adopting measures to send migrants, especially those residing illegally, back to their home countries. Sweden’s center-right government has recently introduced an ambitious plan designed to significantly boost financial incentives for migrants opting to leave voluntarily.

Minister for Immigration Johan Forsell remarked, “This initiative aims to provide those who feel marginalized or have struggled to integrate into Swedish society with a chance for a dignified return and a fresh start elsewhere.” However, he added a caveat: “This won’t be a free ride. Should they return to Sweden, they’ll be obligated to repay the financial support received.”

While the U.S. has yet to match such generous financial offerings, the Trump administration is currently providing assistance for flights for migrants who choose to self-deport, along with a $1,000 stipend.

It will save taxpayers 70%. It currently costs over $17k to arrest, detain, & deport someone. Paying for flights + stipend will cost just $4.5k @BillMelugin_ pic.twitter.com/vHsV4UoRLg
