Steel crumble in bitter loss to Pulse

The Southern Steel put up a commendable fight in the third quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the early lead secured by the Central Pulse, who emerged victorious with a score of 70-45 in front of a packed crowd in Invercargill.

Despite a disappointing result, the Steel showed promise as a team that has improved significantly this season. However, their 26 turnovers and a slow start allowed the Pulse to establish a commanding lead in the opening minutes of the game.

The Steel, who had a close match against the Northern Mystics just days before, managed to narrow the gap in the third quarter after being down by 20 points. The physical encounter for the Robyn Broughton Legacy Trophy ultimately favored the Pulse, who maintained their lead throughout the game.

The Pulse’s strong start, led by center Maddy Gordon, put pressure on the Steel, forcing them to make errors and struggle to find their rhythm. Despite some moments of brilliance from the Steel, the Pulse’s polished performance and efficient ball movement secured their lead, leaving the Steel trailing by 19 points at halftime.

In the second half, the Steel showed glimpses of their potential, with players like Fa’amu Ioane making significant contributions. They managed to reduce the deficit and briefly closed in on the Pulse, but ultimately fell short as the Pulse pulled away in the final quarter to secure the win.
