EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas.

From the very beginning of his presidency, Donald J. Trump has been a relentless advocate for European nations to enhance their defense budgets. His calls, often met with skepticism and resistance, have transformed following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Now, a majority of NATO members are pledging significant increases in military spending, with some already taking action.

On June 31, as U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, he was confronted with an audience that has evidently shifted its perspective.

The Guardian reported:

“Hegseth noted that the Trump administration had urged European nations to shoulder a greater share of their defense responsibilities, and he suggested that Asian countries should now follow suit.”

In a rather ironic twist, Hegseth, who previously labeled Europe as “pathetic” and accused it of “freeloading” on U.S. security, now advocates for Asian nations to take cues from their European counterparts in defense spending.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: ‘tough love’.

As is customary whenever a Trump administration official speaks, Secretary Hegseth has become a favored target for the critical media, particularly when he takes aim at globalist sentiments from the EU. However, in a surprising turn, EU’s leading diplomat, Kaja Kallas, responded with a more optimistic view, stating that “tough love” is preferable to no love at all.

Politico reported:

“‘It’s love nonetheless, so it’s better than no love,’ Kaja Kallas remarked to reporters at a defense forum in Singapore. ‘You heard his speech. He was actually quite positive about Europe, so there’s definitely some love there,’ she added.”

“Hegseth pointed out that the U.S. is encouraging its allies in Europe to take responsibility for their own security by investing more in their military. ‘Thanks to President Trump, they are stepping up,’ he remarked, highlighting Poland and the Baltic States as exemplary allies.”

Addressing the disparities in military spending among European countries, Kallas noted, ‘Some of us have realized a long time ago that we need to invest in defense.’”
