Senate Democrats criticized President Donald Trump’s tax bill, highlighting its potential impact on Medicaid recipients. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) called the Republican budget bill a disaster for middle-class and low-income individuals, citing its focus on cutting social program spending to fund tax cuts.

Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) echoed these concerns, warning that the bill could result in millions of Americans losing healthcare coverage. The bill, which includes trillions in tax cuts and increased border security investments, is expected to push 7.6 million people off Medicaid, primarily by imposing new work requirements.

Warnock pointed to a similar policy in Georgia that has created barriers for healthcare access, emphasizing that work reporting requirements do not effectively promote employment but instead lead to people losing their health coverage.

House Republicans narrowly passed the bill in May, and it now heads to the Senate where it faces opposition from Democrats and potential dissent from GOP members. Republican Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) has also expressed concerns about the bill’s impact on the federal debt.

Despite the White House’s claims that the bill will not affect the deficit, Senator Murphy criticized the administration for what he perceives as misleading statements. The legislation’s focus on tax cuts and Medicaid cuts has raised alarm among Democrats and some Republicans, setting the stage for a contentious debate in the Senate.

Overall, Senate Democrats are united in their criticism of the tax bill, emphasizing its potential harm to vulnerable populations and the need for a more balanced approach to fiscal policy.
