The 85th annual Peabody Awards ceremony took place in Beverly Hills, where winners used their platforms to address pressing issues such as threats to democratic norms, criminal justice reform, and diversity and inclusion goals. One notable recipient was “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels, who accepted the Institutional Award for the long-running sketch comedy series. Michaels reflected on the emotional experience of bringing together past and present cast members for the “SNL50” specials earlier this year.

In his acceptance speech, Michaels hinted at the ongoing speculation surrounding the future of the show, stating, “I’m not planning a sixtieth.” Despite the challenges and pressures of the industry, Michaels expressed gratitude for being able to do what he loves. He also praised the Peabody Awards for their recognition of excellence in media and storytelling.

The ceremony also saw calls for support of public media and opposition to the Trump administration’s efforts to cut funding for programs like PBS and NPR. Winners highlighted the importance of preserving democratic norms and holding those in power accountable for their actions. One notable recipient was Dave Biscobing, a chief investigative reporter from Phoenix, who was honored for his series on police brutality and racism in local policing. Despite attempts to discredit his work, Biscobing emphasized the importance of telling stories that matter and speaking truth to power.

Another impactful story recognized at the awards was “The Only Doctor,” a report on the struggles of rural healthcare in Georgia. Journalist Matthew Hashiguchi shed light on the challenges faced by Dr. Karen Kinsell, the only physician serving a rural community. As healthcare access continues to be a pressing issue, Hashiguchi warned of the consequences of cutting Medicaid and the need for individuals like Dr. Kinsell who are dedicated to serving their communities.

The power of television to effect change was showcased in the award-winning drama “Mr. Bates Vs. the Post Office,” which exposed a scandal within the British Post Office system. The producers emphasized the role of television in bringing awareness to injustices and inspiring action from the public. The ceremony concluded with a promise of more impactful stories to come, reaffirming the importance of storytelling in shaping society.
