A Wisconsin man is facing serious charges for allegedly forging a threatening letter against President Trump in an attempt to have a potential witness against him in a criminal case deported. Demetric D. Scott has been charged with felony witness intimidation, identity theft, and bail jumping. His attorney, Robert Hampton III, has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

The forged letter was sent to state and federal officials, with the return address and name of Ramón Morales Reyes. Immigration agents arrested Morales Reyes, a 54-year-old man, on May 21 in Milwaukee after he dropped his child off at school. The arrest was based on the false claim that Morales Reyes had written a letter threatening to kill President Trump and would “self-deport” to Mexico. However, further investigation revealed that Morales Reyes, who does not speak English fluently, was not involved in writing the letter.

Morales Reyes is actually a victim in the case involving Scott, who is currently in Milwaukee County Jail facing charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery. Scott was overheard discussing letters that needed to be mailed and a plan to have someone picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to have his trial dismissed. He admitted to police that he was behind the forged letters.

Morales Reyes, who works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee and lives with his wife and three children, had recently applied for a U visa for victims of serious crimes. His attorney, Kime Abduli, expressed relief that Morales Reyes was being cleared of any involvement in the letter writing.

His deportation defense lawyer, Cain Oulahan, is now focused on securing Morales Reyes’ release from custody and exploring other options to keep him in the country with his family, which includes his three US citizen children. While the U visa application is pending, it may take years to process, so they are looking into alternative avenues for relief in immigration court.
