BNSF stands up shortline rail team

BNSF Railway has recently announced the formation of a new team that will be solely focused on the growth of single-carload traffic. The First Mile/Last Mile team, comprised of 13 members, brings together BNSF’s Shortline Development and Industrial Products Business Development teams. Led by General Director of Marketing Mark Ganaway, this team will be dedicated to increasing carload volume across BNSF’s extensive 32,500-mile network.

Tom Williams, BNSF’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, emphasized the importance of every single carload to the network and how each rail shipment contributes to creating value for the nation’s consumers. The First Mile/Last Mile team’s primary goal is to provide solutions and overcome barriers to create a more streamlined supply chain from start to finish.

This initiative comes at a crucial time as major railroads have experienced a decline in carloads, mirroring the overall decrease in manufacturing in the United States. However, with a potential shift in American trade policy, there may be an opportunity for growth in this sector. Class I railroads have increasingly relied on short lines to handle carload freight due to their lower cost structures and personalized marketing strategies tailored to low-volume traffic.

In 2024, BNSF introduced the Shortline Select program, which combines the benefits of customized shortline service with BNSF’s extensive reach across 28 states and three Canadian provinces. The establishment of the First Mile/Last Mile team further reinforces BNSF’s commitment to partnering with short lines and developing solutions to drive growth for its customers.

The team will primarily be based at BNSF’s headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, where they will work towards enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the rail network. By collaborating closely with short lines and leveraging their expertise, BNSF aims to optimize its operations and provide enhanced services to its customers.

In conclusion, the formation of the First Mile/Last Mile team underscores BNSF’s commitment to driving growth in single-carload traffic and improving the overall efficiency of its network. By focusing on collaboration with short lines and developing innovative solutions, BNSF aims to enhance its service offerings and provide value to its customers.
