When printmaker Laetitia Campe and painter Lizzie Carruthers seek inspiration, they retreat to their studios nestled in the serene countryside of Upper Clutha.

Campe’s studio, a purpose-built space added to a carport in Hāwea Flat 20 years ago, provides her with the perfect environment to create.

Meanwhile, Carruthers works in a revamped old garage at Fork Farm, located in the picturesque Maungawera Valley. In the past, the garage was cluttered with “artefacts” and had a gaping hole in one wall, but now it serves as Carruthers’ creative sanctuary.

The two artists have joined forces to collaborate on Campe’s upcoming solo exhibition, “Omniscient Creatures”, which will be showcased at Carruthers’ Old Garage Gallery.

Carruthers expressed her desire to support fellow artists by offering her gallery space to Campe, emphasizing the importance of unity within their isolated artistic community.

Campe explained that her own studio was too confined for the large-scale artwork she envisioned sharing with the public. Carruthers’ generous offer of the Old Garage Gallery inspired Campe to pursue her solo exhibition.

Despite juggling various roles as a mother, mountain ski guide, and outdoor enthusiast, Campe views her art practice as an integral part of her identity rather than a mere pastime.

“Omniscient Creatures” draws inspiration from Campe’s personal encounters with the ocean, including memorable experiences skiing in Alaska and swimming with humpback whales in Tonga.

Her admiration for these majestic creatures, whom she considers “lofty and wise”, is reflected in her artwork, which conveys a deep reverence for nature’s nurturing instincts.

The exhibition is a tribute to the beauty and wisdom of these creatures that left a lasting impact on Campe during her travels.
