The red lights are once again flashing along the infamous prostitution strip on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, New York City, represented by Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Grace Meng. Despite a crackdown by police to stop the chaos, sex workers are openly soliciting clients on the crowded sidewalks, alongside vendors selling suspected stolen or counterfeit goods.

Residents of the migrant-dense neighborhood have grown weary of the ongoing blight, likening the conditions to a “Red Light district” or a third-world flea market. Some have even given the strip the nickname “Avenue of the Sweethearts” due to the reputation of women offering sexual services for money.

Local activist and Republican City Council candidate, Ramses Frias, expressed the frustration of residents, stating that criminal activity has reverted to its previous levels, leaving residents feeling like prisoners in their own homes. Gangs such as the 18th Street gang and Tren de Aragua are suspected of operating in the area, with their insignia graffiti-tagged in various spots.

Despite a visible police presence, as witnessed by Fox News Digital, as many as 30 women were observed offering sex for money to Friday night revelers on one block of Roosevelt Avenue. Most women operate on Meng’s side of the strip, while vendors dominate Ocasio-Cortez’s side, with the district border running through the center of the street.

The ongoing issue of rampant prostitution and illegal vending persists, with residents calling for the 90-day police crackdown known as Operation Restore Roosevelt to be made permanent. The crackdown, which involved over 200 additional police officers, resulted in a 29% reduction in crime in the area so far this year.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry emphasized the need for a lasting solution to the problems plaguing the neighborhood. Despite some progress, including the raiding of 15 brothels out of 30 court filings, much work remains to be done to address the illicit activities in the area.

Residents and authorities have called on Ocasio-Cortez and Meng to do more to tackle the issues on Roosevelt Avenue. While Meng described the situation as “concerning” and claimed to be working with local law enforcement, Ocasio-Cortez’s office stated that she has engaged with local stakeholders and helped fix lights in the neighborhood.

Overall, the community is looking for stronger measures to address the ongoing challenges on Roosevelt Avenue, including stricter laws and increased support from elected representatives. The plight of the sex workers involved is also a concern, with many likely being trafficked into the underground world of prostitution. Residents are hopeful that with the right support and actions from lawmakers, the situation on Roosevelt Avenue can be improved for the betterment of all involved.
