Google has recently announced a slew of major software upgrades for phones, following Apple’s operating system overhaul at WWDC 2025. The tech giant is rolling out a new release of Android 16 for its Pixel smartphone lineup, along with some exciting new features and improvements.

One of the key updates in Android 16 is the addition of group chat to RCS, allowing users to engage in group conversations seamlessly. Google Photos is also getting AI-powered edit suggestions, making it easier for users to enhance their photos with just a few taps. Additionally, support for corporate badges in Google Wallet has been added, catering to enterprise users who need quick access to their work credentials.

Accessibility support has been enhanced in Android 16, with improved customization options for messaging and contacts. The release also introduces iOS-style live notifications on the lock screen for real-time updates, as well as Google’s new Material 3 Expressive design language for a more visually appealing user interface.

In terms of security, Android 16 offers new capabilities to safeguard against theft and scams, along with an updated advanced protection mode for public figures. Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio devices are now supported, allowing users to use them for better call quality. Native controls for controlling volume on the device from the phone have also been added.

Google is also rolling out updates for Android tablets later this year, including desktop-style windowing support and custom keyboard shortcuts for more efficient navigation. Google Messages is getting an update that adds RCS group chat support, along with features like HDR screenshots, adaptive refresh rate, and forced grouping for notifications to reduce clutter in the notification drawer.

On the Pixel front, Google is introducing a new set of monthly feature upgrades called “Pixel Drop.” Some of the new features include a “Pixel VIPs” widget for viewing interactions with favorite contacts, detailed captions for video content, custom stickers creation using Gboard keyboard, and AI-powered summaries in French and German in the Recorder app.

Pixel devices are also getting a battery health indicator for certain models, a new accessibility feature through the Magnifier app, and support for Google’s Gemini chatbot app in the Google Docs app on Android. Enterprise users can now store their corporate badges in Google Wallet and use Gemini chatbot app in Google Docs for summarizing content, getting insights, and translating text.

Overall, Google’s latest software upgrades for phones bring a host of new features and improvements to enhance the user experience. The updates are rolling out gradually, with some features already available and others set to be released in the coming months. Stay tuned for more exciting updates from Google as they continue to innovate and improve their products for users worldwide.
