Google has rolled out the Android 16 upgrade for Pixel phones, but the approach to the release has left many feeling unsatisfied. The update was included as part of the June Pixel Drop, with minimal fanfare compared to previous major OS updates.

One of the main issues with the Android 16 release is the absence of Material 3 Expressive, Google’s new design language. While the update is currently available for Pixel phones, the refreshed look that would typically accompany a major OS release won’t be implemented until September, likely coinciding with the launch of the Google Pixel 10.

As a Pixel 9 Pro user with Android 16 installed, the overall look and feel of the update are very similar to Android 15. The familiar menus, icons, and layouts make it feel more like an incremental update rather than a significant overhaul.

However, users who have access to the Android 16 beta on devices like the Google Pixel 9 are experiencing some of the Material 3 Expressive features. The beta version includes subtle design changes, such as a thicker font on the PIN code entry and a more condensed lock screen widget. The Settings menu has new color-coded icons and toggles for a fresh look.

The latest beta version also introduces Google’s new desktop mode, similar to Samsung DeX, adding a new dimension to the user experience. Despite these updates, some users may still be on the fence about Material 3 Expressive and its impact on the overall user interface.

While Google may have reserved the full Material 3 Expressive experience for the upcoming Pixel 10 launch, some users feel that consolidating all the updates into one release would have had a more significant impact. As a Pixel 9 Pro user, the current Android 16 update may feel underwhelming compared to the anticipation surrounding the new design language.

In conclusion, the Android 16 update brings some new features and improvements to Pixel phones, but the absence of Material 3 Expressive leaves some users wanting more. The gradual rollout approach may have its benefits, but for now, users like myself are left with a sense of disappointment.
