The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a sweeping initiative to terminate the legal status of over 500,000 individuals from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Haiti currently residing in the U.S. without authorization. Recipients of these termination notices will learn that their parole is revoked, along with their right to work in the country.

In a statement released on June 12, DHS emphasized that the affected individuals must vacate the country immediately if they have not secured lawful residency. This decision follows a Supreme Court ruling on May 30, which upheld the Trump administration’s authority to end a parole program initiated during the Biden administration. This program had previously shielded these individuals from deportation.

According to DHS, the termination notices will be dispatched via email to the addresses provided by the parolees, explicitly stating that their parole status and employment permissions are revoked, effective immediately. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin underscored that the Biden administration had allowed a significant influx of “poorly vetted” individuals to enter the U.S., which she argues has undermined job opportunities for American workers.

McLaughlin further claimed that the continuation of this program had compelled federal employees to advance policies despite evidence of fraud, suggesting that the termination of the parole program is a necessary step toward restoring public safety.

In an unusual twist, DHS is encouraging individuals to self-deport using the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) mobile application, which offers a $1,000 incentive for those who choose to leave voluntarily. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reiterated this message on June 9, warning that failure to self-deport could result in fines, arrest, and a permanent ban from returning to the U.S. “Take control of your departure,” she urged, “and potentially preserve your chances for legal re-entry.”

This recent decision from the Supreme Court followed an emergency appeal from the Trump administration after a federal judge in Boston blocked its attempt to terminate the program. The Justice Department contends that protections for those fleeing instability in their home countries were always intended to be temporary and that the DHS has the authority to revoke them without judicial intervention.
