A daring individual wearing a hood and mask managed to climb the towering Roosevelt Island Tramway on Monday evening, leading to a dramatic rescue operation by the police. The 20-year-old suspect was captured on video casually walking along the gangway of the tramway’s 250-foot-tall support tower on the Manhattan side. The footage shows him pausing at times to check his phone and even navigating a series of ladders on the tower before venturing out onto a narrow I-beam.
Concerned New Yorkers alerted 911 to report the climber’s presence just before 7 p.m., prompting a response from law enforcement. Police officers equipped with climbing gear made their way up to the suspect as a NYPD helicopter monitored from above. Despite their approach, the suspect defiantly gestured towards the officers as they closed in on him.
Meanwhile, Emergency Service Unit officers and firefighters positioned below the tower in Andrew Haswell Green Park observed the unfolding events. The brave officers eventually reached the top of the tower, secured the suspect in safety gear, and safely brought him down to the ground without any injuries. The individual was then transported to Weill-Cornell Medical Center for evaluation by paramedics, with pending charges from the police.
Although there is no indication that the climber was affiliated with any protest or cause, the incident remains under investigation. In a similar incident in 2004, an Astoria man was arrested for attempting to climb the Tramway tower and charged with trespassing. Additionally, the hidden camera reality show “Impractical Jokers” executed a prank ten years ago involving a character climbing to the top of the tower, although it is unclear whether they had official approval for the stunt.
The NYPD did not confirm whether the television show had obtained permission for the stunt, but a reality television producer mentioned that it was unlikely they would undertake such a risky endeavor without clearance from the city first. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with unauthorized climbing of structures and the importance of adhering to safety protocols.
