As a new teacher, finishing your first year is a significant accomplishment. However, it’s understandable that you may still feel wound up from the stress of the school year. It’s important to give yourself some grace and time to unwind and recharge.

One way to start is by making the first few days of summer as mellow as possible. Take the time to ask yourself what you really want to do each day, whether it’s eating brunch, doing yoga, reading a new book, or simply sitting quietly in a park. Not having any obligations during the summer is a privilege, so make sure to take advantage of it and do things that help you feel restful and relaxed.

If you feel the need to disconnect, consider planning a vacation, staycation, or weekend trip. Spending time with friends or family you don’t usually see can also help you relax and recharge. Additionally, trying out new activities or hobbies can help you shift out of your usual routine and come back rejuvenated.

For those who enjoy professional development, consider reading books or attending online courses to advance your teaching skills. Taking classes that aren’t directly related to teaching but can still benefit your work as an educator is also a great way to grow during the summer.

Lastly, don’t forget to reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been neglected during the school year. Whether it’s a hobby you used to love or a pastime you’ve missed, now is the perfect time to rediscover those interests and find balance in your life.

In the future, consider planning fun activities for the summer ahead of time. There are funded or paid professional development opportunities that can help you grow your career while still enjoying your time off. Remember to prioritize self-care and relaxation during the summer months—you deserve it!
