Residents of Southland, the Lakes District, and Central Otago should brace themselves for a significant downpour later today. A MetService spokesperson has warned of heavy rain and strong north-to-northwest gales expected to hit central and southern parts of the country as an active front moves onto the South Island and slowly progresses northward.

An Orange Heavy Rain Warning has been issued for the headwaters of Otago’s lakes and rivers from 2pm today until 6am tomorrow. Up to 200mm of rain is forecasted around the main divide, with up to 150mm expected within 20km to the east. Peak rates of 15mm to 25mm per hour are anticipated on Thursday near the divide, with the freezing level at around 2300 meters.

Residents living near lakes and rivers in the area are advised to be prepared for the impending deluge. The spokesperson cautioned that streams and rivers could rise rapidly, leading to surface flooding, landslides, and hazardous driving conditions. Precautionary measures such as clearing drains and gutters, avoiding low-lying areas, and driving cautiously are recommended.

In Fiordland, an Orange Heavy Rain Warning is in effect from noon today until 6am tomorrow, with up to 170mm of rain expected, possibly more in localized areas. Peak rates of up to 25mm per hour are expected this evening, with the possibility of thunderstorms tomorrow morning.

Westland District is expected to receive up to 210mm of rain between 6pm today and noon tomorrow, with peak rates reaching up to 30mm per hour. Similarly, the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers (around and south of Arthur’s Pass) could see up to 210mm of rain near the main divide and up to 180mm within 20km to the east during the same timeframe.

Residents in these areas are urged to stay updated with the latest forecasts as watches may be upgraded to warnings, and additional warnings and watches could be issued. For more information, visit the official MetService website.
