Scott Brown Announces Second Senate Bid in New Hampshire

Former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown has officially declared his candidacy for the United States Senate in New Hampshire, marking his return to the political arena.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Brown stated, “I’m running for the United States Senate to restore common sense, keep our border secure, and fight for our New Hampshire values.” This declaration positions him as a leading Republican contender following the decision by Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen to retire in 2026, a fact first reported by WMUR.

Brown, who previously served as Ambassador to New Zealand during Donald Trump’s presidency, offered praise for the former president in his campaign launch video. He asserted that Trump “is fighting every day to right the ship,” citing his accomplishments in securing the border, confronting China, and enhancing America’s global standing.

With his announcement, Brown emerges as the most prominent Republican candidate in the race to succeed Shaheen. This comes on the heels of former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu opting out of a Senate run earlier this year, despite Trump expressing hope for Sununu’s candidacy.

On the Democratic side, Representative Chris Pappas swiftly reacted to Brown’s announcement by accusing him of seeking “yet another opportunity to do Wall Street’s bidding and blindly support President Trump.” This marks the beginning of a contentious rivalry, which has been simmering as both candidates have traded barbs in the lead-up to the election.

In his launch video, Brown took an opportunity to critique Pappas, stating, “Chris Pappas wants a better title. I want a better America.” This comment underscores the broader theme of competing visions for the future of New Hampshire and the nation as a whole.

The rivalry between Brown and Pappas has deep roots, as Brown has previously targeted Pappas for supporting policies like “wide open borders,” endorsing participation of transgender women in women’s sports, and allegedly misleading constituents regarding President Biden’s cognitive abilities. In turn, Pappas has sought to tie Brown closely to Trump, a connection that Brown has not shied away from in his campaign materials.

As the campaign unfolds, the Democratic campaign arm has also launched attacks on Brown concerning abortion rights and other key issues. Brown’s preparations for this Senate bid have included active participation in GOP senators’ meetings and maintaining connections with the Republican Senate campaign apparatus, indicating a strategic approach to his return to politics.
