DirecTV Ends Satellite Subscriptions For New Customers in Some Markets

DirecTV is currently conducting a trial run in select markets where new customers are only given the option to sign up for its streaming service, rather than its traditional satellite offerings. This experiment was first reported by the website Cord Cutters News. In certain zip codes, new customers attempting to subscribe to DirecTV are directed to purchase the company’s streaming service instead.

On DirecTV’s website, a message now appears for customers in these trial markets stating that satellite service is not currently available in all areas. Customers are encouraged to switch to the DirecTV Streaming App as an alternative. However, DirecTV has clarified that this is not a permanent change and is only a limited-time trial to increase awareness and adoption of their streaming service.

The company has not disclosed the exact number or specific markets included in this trial run. It is noted that primarily large cities with robust high-speed internet access are targeted for the streaming-only model, while rural areas with limited broadband availability may still have access to satellite service for new customers.

DirecTV has been expanding its presence in the streaming space, with the launch of the “MyFree DirecTV” FAST streaming service offering over 105 channels. Additionally, the company introduced a “MySports” streaming package with 40 channels earlier this year, as part of its “Genre Packs” strategy focusing on interests like news, sports, and entertainment.

Customers can access DirecTV streaming through various devices such as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, or the company’s Gemini device. Currently, DirecTV boasts around 11 million subscribers across both satellite and streaming platforms. This trial run reflects the company’s efforts to adapt to the changing landscape of the television industry and cater to the preferences of modern consumers.
