The Prime Minister has voiced his support for the government’s boot camps despite facing criticism over one participant being removed from the pilot after a court appearance, stating that these programs are designed for some of New Zealand’s most challenging young individuals, and it’s crucial not to give up on them.

Oranga Tamariki revealed on its website that one teenager involved in the pilot was “withdrawn” and moved to Corrections custody. The agency refrained from providing further details due to the matter being before the court, but Iain Chapman, the acting deputy chief executive of youth justice services, expressed disappointment over the outcome for the young person in question.

Chapman emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting the remaining eight participants in the pilot as it nears its conclusion next month. The focus is now on ensuring the best possible outcomes for these individuals.

The military-style academies for youth have faced scrutiny from opposition parties regarding transparency and the reoffending rate of participants. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon defended the initiative, acknowledging that not every participant may avoid reoffending, but highlighting the government’s efforts to reduce recidivism through various programs.

Luxon acknowledged the challenges faced during the pilot and expressed a willingness to learn from the experience to enhance the effectiveness of the boot camps. He emphasized the importance of giving young people the opportunity to change their lives and choose a positive path forward.

Despite the difficulties encountered, Luxon affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting at-risk youth and helping them make better choices for their future.
