Original article published by The Epoch Times: Eric Trump Proposes Purchasing Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal via Amazon

In a curious continuation of his father’s playful jabs towards Canada, Eric Trump, the son of the soon-to-be U.S. President Donald Trump, has taken to social media to make a tongue-in-cheek proposal: purchasing Canada through Amazon.

In a recent post on Truth Social and X on December 24, Eric shared a digitally altered image depicting his father placing an order for Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, as if they were mere items in an online shopping cart.

Donald Trump has a history of jesting about transforming Canada into the “51st state,” a quip he first made during a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago on November 29, where he suggested Canada should consider statehood if it couldn’t maintain a trade surplus with the U.S.

Finance Minister Dominic Leblanc, who was present at the dinner, later clarified that Trump’s comments were intended humorously, characterizing the exchange as “cheerful banter” between the two leaders.

On December 3, Eric Trump shared an AI-generated image of himself next to the Canadian flag with the caption “Oh Canada!” He further remarked on December 10 that it was a “pleasure” to dine with “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.”

Days later, on December 18, he claimed that numerous Canadians wish for their nation to become the 51st state, arguing that this would lead to significant tax savings and enhanced military protection.

Although Trudeau has not directly addressed Trump’s annexation jokes, he has subtly criticized the U.S. leader in recent speeches. On December 9, he remarked that many countries have voters questioning their electoral choices, and on December 11, he commented on the setback for women represented by the November 5 defeat of U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris.

In light of Trump’s threats to impose 25% tariffs on Canada unless it strengthens border security to curb the flow of illegal drugs and immigrants, the Canadian government has been proactive in enhancing its border measures. Recently, Ottawa announced a $1.3 billion initiative aimed at fortifying border security, which includes establishing a new North American task force to tackle organized crime and drug trafficking, along with increased funding for surveillance technologies.

In a broader context of territorial ambitions, Trump has also revived his interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark, an idea he floated during his first term. On December 22, he asserted on Truth Social that acquiring the 57,000-population island is an “absolute necessity,” prompting Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede to firmly state that the island is “not for sale.”

Additionally, Trump expressed grievances about the United States being “ripped off” by the Panama Canal, claiming that the tolls for U.S. vessels are excessively high. He has demanded that control of the canal, which the U.S. constructed in the early 20th century but transferred to Panama in 1999, be returned to the United States. In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino asserted that “every square meter” of the Panama Canal belongs to Panama, to which Trump retorted, “We’ll see about that!” Trump also circulated an AI-generated image showing an American flag atop the canal, captioned “Welcome to the United States Canal!”
