During a recent visit to an immigrant detention facility in Florida, the workings of the Trump administration were put on display, notably through remarks made by Trump and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

Amid the visit, a member of the press pool, seemingly aligned with the administration’s right-wing agenda, posed a question regarding CNN’s coverage of an ICE detection application. In response, Noem declared, “We are collaborating with the Department of Justice to explore the possibility of prosecuting them for their actions, as they are actively encouraging individuals to evade law enforcement operations, which we believe is illegal.”

Her comments seemed to energize Trump, prompting him to elaborate:

“They might face prosecution for disseminating false reports. Yes, regarding the situation in Iran. The reports were completely inaccurate. Our personnel should be honored, not questioned upon their return with statements like, ‘What do you mean we missed our targets?’ We struck first. The pilots confirmed that they successfully hit their targets. Thus, they may very well be prosecuted for their actions, which we consider entirely illegal.”

In a subsequent statement, CNN clarified, “This is an application that is publicly accessible to any iPhone user wishing to download it. Reporting the existence of this app, or any other, does not constitute illegal activity or an endorsement by CNN.”

CNN’s assertion holds merit; there are no laws surrounding “false reports” in this context, nor are there any legal grounds for prosecuting the network. This exchange illustrates how easily a Trump administration official can provoke him, showcasing a lack of a coherent thought process within his cabinet. Instead of a team of experts, the administration appears to be populated by loyalists who echo Trump’s beliefs.

They seem to operate under the assumption that their feelings can supersede factual intelligence reports, particularly regarding military operations. This reflects a broader strategy to intimidate the media into self-censorship, a tactic that could undermine the democratic processes and institutions in the United States.

What are your thoughts on the threats made by Trump and Noem towards CNN? We welcome your insights in the comments below.
