A driving school in New York City has found itself in hot water, accused of hastily issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, even when they displayed a shocking lack of driving skills.

What could possibly motivate such a reckless endeavor? One might wonder what illicit activities could be enabled by a driver’s license, apart from the obvious—driving. Are we tiptoeing into the territory of voter registration? Is that even a permissible line of inquiry?

The New York Post reports:

NYC driving school allegedly rigged driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants — even if they couldn’t drive: DA

A driving school in the Big Apple is under fire for allegedly bribing DMV examiners to expedite driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants—many of whom reportedly had no clue how to operate a vehicle, according to Staten Island prosecutors.

T&E Driving School, located in Queens, allegedly received payments from Chinese immigrants—many of whom struggled with English—and funneled these funds to a cohort of Department of Motor Vehicles employees on Staten Island to illegally secure driver’s licenses, as outlined by District Attorney Michael McMahon during a press conference.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Road Test,” was the culmination of a collaborative investigation involving state authorities and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, prosecutors stated.

“Our investigation revealed that T&E Driving School egregiously ignored the laws and protocols essential for ensuring public safety on the roads,” remarked George Ioannidis, assistant special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in New York, during a Tuesday briefing.

“As alleged, T&E leveraged social media and targeted advertisements to exploit vulnerable members of the Chinese community, ensuring they received driver’s licenses regardless of their immigration status, language proficiency, or even their ability to drive,” he added.

A similar scheme was recently uncovered in Florida, leading to prosecutions for those involved.
