The sheer scale of destruction and loss of life caused by the Texas flooding can be difficult to grasp without witnessing its rapid onset. A time-lapse video capturing the flooding of the Llano River has recently gone viral on social media, and for good reason. It starkly illustrates the speed at which water levels surged, serving as a harrowing reminder of nature’s formidable power.

It’s easy to overlook the might of water until you find yourself confronted by an overwhelming deluge.

ABC News has compiled a timeline detailing the catastrophic flooding:

Friday, July 4

Flash flooding unfolded rapidly, with threats continuing throughout the day, particularly in areas west of Austin and San Antonio. A flash flood emergency was declared for South-central Kerr County, including Hunt—a “particularly dangerous situation” where up to 10 inches of rain had already fallen, with additional rainfall expected at rates of up to 4 inches per hour.

7 a.m.: Authorities in Kerr County, Texas, began evacuating residents near the Guadalupe River in Hunt due to significant flooding from 6 to 7 inches of torrential rainfall.

10 a.m.: The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office confirmed “multiple fatalities” as a direct result of the “catastrophic flooding.” Residents were urged to shelter in place and refrain from travel, especially those near creeks, streams, and the Guadalupe River, who were advised to immediately seek higher ground.

1 p.m.: The flooding, described as “devastating and deadly,” had already eclipsed the record set during the 1987 flood, marking it as the highest flood on record, according to Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly during a press conference.

3 p.m.: Heavy rain continued to batter parts of Texas, delivering more than a month’s worth of precipitation to areas like San Angelo.

This event unfolded with astonishing speed, highlighting the unpredictable nature of extreme weather. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families as they navigate this tragedy.
