In a dramatic crackdown on illegal marijuana cultivation, federal agents have identified nearly 790 acres of illicit grow operations in Southern California.

On June 18, law enforcement officials arrested approximately 75 undocumented migrants in the vicinity of Coachella, California, as part of a significant operation aimed at dismantling three illegal marijuana farms, according to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reports.

Additionally, a U.S. citizen was apprehended for obstructing law enforcement efforts during the raid.

Anthony Chrysanthis, the DEA’s deputy special agent in charge for the Los Angeles Field Division, provided insight into the conditions uncovered at these operations during a press briefing on June 20.

“The operation in Thermal, California, revealed alarming working and living conditions, especially as temperatures soared to 112 degrees,” Chrysanthis remarked. “This is not just a matter of illegal cultivation; it’s about human rights and safety.”

Multiple federal and local law enforcement agencies executed search warrants on June 18, targeting illegal grow sites that spanned nearly 790 acres in Thermal, located just south of Coachella in the arid desert region of Southern California.

“Given the scale and complexity of these operations, the DEA sought assistance from various federal partners,” the agency reported via social media platform X.

Footage shared online depicted vast indoor facilities brimming with mature marijuana plants, equipped with advanced lighting and technology at one of the locations.

The operations appeared meticulously organized, featuring gravel paths, white trailers, and barbed-wire fencing encircling the area.

In one of the videos, DEA agents were seen entering a trailer and using crowbars to force open another. Chrysanthis later revealed that two men were found locked inside a trailer, highlighting the dire circumstances in which some workers were living.

Inside the trailer, the conditions were appalling — makeshift beds were strewn with refuse, a rudimentary bathroom was in disarray, and the floor was littered with garbage, bottles, and medications.

“These operators showed no signs of intent to cease operations,” Chrysanthis stated. “Evidence pointed to ongoing construction activities.”

The operation involved collaboration among several federal entities, including the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Marshal’s Office, Internal Revenue Service, FBI, National Guard, Department of Defense, and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms units.

The prevalence of black-market cannabis has surged in California, prompting significant state intervention. In 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom reported the seizure of $534 million worth of illegal marijuana.

Since 2019, the total value of seized illegal cannabis has reached approximately $2.8 billion, illustrating the scale of the challenge that authorities face in regulating the industry.
