A recent warning from a Reddit user claiming to be an airline employee has sparked a discussion among travelers about the potential risks of discarding bag tags at the airport. The post, titled “Toss your bag tags at home,” was shared in the “r/delta” forum on Reddit by an individual who identified themselves as a baggage claims manager.

The user advised travelers to be cautious and not remove their bag tags at the airport, as they could contain valuable information that scammers could exploit. According to the Reddit post, scammers could use the information on bag tags to access travel itineraries and potentially engage in fraudulent activities.

While some Reddit users debated the likelihood of such a scam, many shared their own habits when it comes to handling bag tags. Some users admitted to forgetting to remove their tags until their next trip, while others disclosed that they always discard their tags at home.

One user mentioned that Japan has secured bag tag disposal receptacles near the baggage claim exit, indicating that this practice may be common in other countries as well. Additionally, some users suggested shredding bag tags and printed boarding passes as a precautionary measure to protect personal information.

Despite the concerns raised in the Reddit post, travel industry expert Gary Leff believes that the scam described may not be prevalent. Leff clarified that bag tags typically contain limited information, such as a last name, flight number, and bag tag number, rather than sensitive details like a ticket number or street address.

Leff emphasized that baggage handling systems track the movement of bags from check-in to baggage claim, making it difficult for scammers to successfully file false missing bag claims. He noted that the most common scam involving lost bag claims is falsely reporting missing items that were actually delivered.

In conclusion, while it is advisable to exercise caution and protect personal information, the likelihood of falling victim to a bag tag scam may not be as high as initially suggested. Travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow best practices for handling bag tags to minimize any potential risks.
