Los Angeles’ Housing Dilemma: A New Chapter Post-Wildfires

This week, the stark reality of Los Angeles’ housing crisis emerged as less than 100 building permits were issued in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that swept through neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades just six months prior.

In response, Governor Gavin Newsom has unveiled a $101 million initiative aimed at constructing ‘multifamily rental housing’ to accommodate the residents forced from their homes. One can’t help but wonder if this was part of a larger plan all along.

With @California_HCD, we’re delivering $101M to help rapidly rebuild affordable, multifamily rental housing for Angelenos displaced by the January wildfires.

A Predictable Turn of Events?

Is anyone truly shocked by this development?

Governor Newsom commits $101 million to jumpstart critical rebuilding efforts after LA Fires

Los Angeles, California – Six months post-wildfire, Governor Gavin Newsom, in collaboration with the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), announced a $101 million fund aimed at swiftly rebuilding essential affordable multifamily rental housing in the affected areas. Thousands remain displaced after the January wildfires, exacerbating an already strained rental market.

Tomiquia Moss, Secretary of the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency: “The State’s special Multifamily Finance Super NOFA will galvanize the collective public-private response to the wildfires in Los Angeles County, expediting and expanding opportunities to build affordable housing for low-income residents. By prioritizing affordable housing projects that are ready to go, these funds will accelerate household stability, climate, and health outcomes in communities.”

Public Sentiment: A Mixed Bag

So the truth is coming out. @GavinNewsom who has a lot of blame for the SoCal fires is basically saying, he is going to steal taxpayers’ money to build ghettos that people HE displaced can “rent.” It’s obviously a money grab folks. Sad. This guy has got to go. https://t.co/wYWq0OkvPk

I wanted to think it was all a conspiracy theory but here we go. . . https://t.co/kBEwu87hqF

People were calling this immediately after the fires and others called them conspiracy theories.
Land will be used for multi-family rental units.
Not for the homeowners that lost everything.
Multi-family units. “Affordable” https://t.co/ZhCjdSPDss

That single-family home you had in the Palisades is now an apartment building you make too much money to qualify to live in.

At the end of the day, people simply want to restore their homes and lives. The last thing they asked for was an influx of multifamily apartment complexes.
